The explanation of the readings(the fourth Sunday)

Sunday of the fourth week to the fiftieth day the holy day is the limit of light

The readings of this Sunday talk about the Son who is the light of knowing the Father

Psalms

So the readings start with the vespers psalm from the psalm n.118 from which the psalm of Matins and liturgy come.It is the psalm of the Son’s visitation of the people and His tabernacle among them as God according to the expression of St.Athanasius the Apostolic. Therefore, the three psalms (vespers,Matins and liturgy) talk about the manifestation of the Father’s goodness and His divine mercies in the salvation which the Son of God had offered. So He said in Matins psalm “And have become my salvation.”and in the liturgy psalm, “And He has become my salvation”

The vespers psalm starts with the Father’s goodness and His unlimited divine mercies to humanity, “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 118:1)

The psalm of Matins talks about the Son’s praise and making confession to Him because He had declared the Father’s salvation”I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation.” (Psalm 118:21)

The psalm of the liturgy starts with the Father’s mission of the Son Who is the right of the Father as it was said in the psalm, ” The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Psalm 110:1)

So it is said in the psalm, “The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.” (Psalm 118:16)

The Vespers gospel

In the Vespers gospel,it tells us about the word of God is the spirit of life and the light of knowing God, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. (John 6:63-68)

Matins Gospel

This meaning is confirmed in Matins gospel, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” (John 6:51)

The result of the Jews’refusal of the light, “but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.” (John 8:59)

It is clear that knowing God comes as a result of memorizing the word which declares His knowledge”but I know Him and keep His speech”

Pauline Epistle

In Pauline Epistle,it tells us about the light of the Son’s glory which is revealed in the gospel, “to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”( 2 Thessalonians 2:14)

The call for standing fast in His word and commandment, “Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle.”( 2 Thessalonians 2:15)

It also tells us about the prayer of the church for the sake of spreading the light of the word’s glory everywhere”Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you” (2 Thessalonians 3:1)

Catholic Epistle

In Catholic Epistle,it talks about the motive of the Father’s mission of the Son;love. It is the Father’s love of the world, “In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved

God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10)

Our love to one another is the guarantee of testing God’s love to us and in us. “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.” (1 John 4:12)

Praxis

In Praxis,we see the belief of some nations in the possibility of God’s appearance to the people, “Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”( Acts 14:11)

Although the Father had revealed Himself, some nations didn’t want to recognize Him, “who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.” ( Acts 14:16-17)

It also talks about the power of salvation which the paralysed man resorted to and got healed, “And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. This man heard Paul speaking.” ( Acts 14:8-9)

The liturgy gospel

In the liturgy gospel,it tells us about the Son who is the Father’s light and the light of our knowing the Father, “Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you”(John 12:35)

“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” (John 12:46)

It also declares that the word of God and His will are the source of life and the reason of judgement.

“He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him-the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. And I know that His command is everlasting life. (John 12:48-50)

The result of the unbelief and loving the praise of people more than God’s praise “These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him,Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:”He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him. Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but

because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. (John 12:36-43)
